林羅山〈はやしらざん・1583-1657〉は、江戸前期の儒者。名は信勝、字は子信。法名道春（どうしゅん）。少年期には京都・建仁寺の禅僧について学んだが、慶長９年〈1604〉、藤原惺窩〈ふじわらせいか・1561-1619〉に師事。「羅山」は師・惺窩が命名した儒学者としての名である。早くから朱子学に深く心を潜め、尋常ならざる博識であったという。翌年には二条城で徳川家康〈とくがわいえやす・1542-1616〉に謁見、命により剃髪僧形となり道春と称した。やがて、江戸に下向して、以来、徳川幕府歴代将軍の侍講をつとめた。朝鮮通信史の応接、文書・諸法度の起草、史書の編纂など、幕府の中での地位はゆるぎないものにした。寛永６年〈1629〉民部卿法印（四位相当）に叙任、翌年には、江戸上野忍岡に屋敷が与えられ、家塾（のちの昌平黌）を始める。が、明暦の大火で江戸城中の書物を焼失した失意の中に病死。75歳であった。
