Kanroji Chikanaga (1424-1500), the son of Fusanaga, was a Muromachi-Period court noble. The highest title he attained was Senior Second Rank with the administrative post of Provisional Major Counselor. He turned to Buddhism in 1493 and adopted the religious name of Renku. His diaries, “Chikanaga Kyo-ki” (Chronicles of Lord Chikanaga), have been preserved to this day. In composing an Ippongyo Waka Kaishi, the poet first writes a waka with a theme taken from any teachings in the 28 chapters of the Lotus Sutra. He can use a religious theme from any “ge” of his choice. (“Ge” is a Buddhist sermon written in poetic form.) After writing the religious poem, the poet composes the second poem with the title of “Jukkai”, which can be translatedas “sigh” or “grief.” In his Ippongyo Waka Kaishi, Chikanaga wrote the opening religious poem using the allegory of a dreamlike palace. Unfortunately, the left half of the original kaishi with Chikanaga’s “Jukkai” poem is missing.Chikanaga signed this kaishi as “Local Administrator Chikanaga”, a post he was at between age 33 (1456) and age 70 (1493), when he became a monk. Based on the traditional Sesonji-School style, Chikanaga’s hand also shows a free-spirited style. Perhaps the religious poem was written in the poet’s old age.
Waka about the Dream Palace: Off the rigorous path worn by Buddha, one will not waken in the palace of the spirit.
