薄様の斐紙（雁皮紙）に金泥界を引き、肥痩の著しい特異の行書体で『法華経』を書写する。正中３年〈1326〉初頭頃から同年５月（嘉暦元年。４月に改元）にかけて、後醍醐天皇の近臣・万里小路宣房〈までのこうじのぶふさ・1258-1338〉が『法華経』（全８巻）を書写した。完本として２巻が伝存するが（巻第二＝京都・天授院蔵、巻第八＝前田育徳会蔵）、そのほかは、江戸時代の古筆愛好の流行につれて切断され、古筆手鑑などに貼られて伝来した。この断簡も、そのような経緯のもの。笠置切の名は、元弘の乱（元弘元年〈1331〉）で宣房が後醍醐天皇とともに笠置寺（京都府相楽郡笠置町の笠置山に所在した）に逃れたことにちなむ追慕の命名。
