Transcribed on paper dyed yellow-brown with Amur cork, the exhibited piece is a segment of a copy of Volume 13 of the Dazhidulun Sutra (consisting of 100 volumes). Due to similarities in calligraphic technique and style, this copy was most likely a part of the manuscripts made in 734 by the congregation of Kita Temple in Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). The educated members of the congregation, called chishiki, namely “donors, friends,” made devotional offerings for the Buddhist cause and engaged in supportive activities, such as transcribing sutra and donating money and goods for the erection of Buddha statues and performance of other services. The Kita Temple congregation was known to have copied the entire 100 volumes of the Dazhidulun Sutra by dividing it up among several groups of calligraphers. The exhibited piece is evidence of the spread of sutra copying even into the remote provinces and, therefore, holds great cultural significance. The brushwork of the piece is characterized by its low center of gravity, with the final strokes ending in scribe-style splashes, showing the influence of sutra copying techniques of the Six Dynasties through the Sui Dynasty in China. Other parts of the Kita Temple transcription of the Dazhidulun Sutra are preserved at the Kyoto National Museum (Volume 69), Toshodaiji Temple (Volume 84), and Ishiyama-Dera Temple (Volume 33). The Dazhidulun Sutra is a compendium of scriptures of encyclopedic nature, and contains Buddhist teachings on widely varied subjects. It was revered most highly during the Nara Period, especially among the Hosso (“Idealistic”) and Sanron (“Three Ideologies” or “Three Treatises”) sects.
