『大般若経』（大般若波羅蜜多経）は、「般若波羅蜜」（完成された最高の智慧との意）を説く多くの般若経典群の総称で、全600巻から成る。あらゆる仏典中で最大規模の経典。唐の玄奘の訳。『法華経』とおなじく写経の功徳を説く。さらに、この経典を供養するものは諸の神によって常に護られると説くことから、わが国においても、奈良時代以後、平安・鎌倉時代と、永い間にわたって、しばしば書写されている。とくに平安時代後期から鎌倉時代初期にかけて紺紙金泥の『大般若経』が書写された記録が多く残されている。この１巻は鎌倉時代中期の遺品と推定される。表紙には金泥で宝相華唐草文を配し、見返し絵には、霊鷲山の山麓に、般若菩薩（または釈迦三尊か？）の眷属（とりまきの者、随順する者）として大般若守護の十六善神（般若経を受持し、読誦する者を守護するとされる16体の護法夜叉善神）が同じく金泥で描かれる。これは、中国では宋代、日本では鎌倉時代以降に多い図様である。独得の字体は、当時通行の版経の文字に影響を受けたものと思われる。
