智忠親王〈としただしんのう・1619-62〉は、桂宮（八条宮）智仁親王〈としひとしんのう・1579-1629〉の第一王子。天正17年〈1589〉、関白豊臣秀吉〈とよとみひでよし・1537-98〉の奏請により創立された八条宮家が、のちに常盤井宮（ときわいのみや）、京極宮（きょうごくのみや）、そして桂宮（かつらのみや）と改められ、伏見宮（ふしみのみや）・有栖川宮（ありすがわのみや）・閑院宮（かんいんのみや）とともに四親王家と称された。智忠親王は、寛永元年〈1624〉、従兄の後水尾天皇〈ごみずのおてんのう・1596-1680〉の猶子となり、同３年〈1626〉親王宣下を受ける。さらに同６年〈1629〉、父智仁親王を継いで桂宮第２代となった。学問・芸術を好んだ父智仁親王と後水尾天皇の影響を受けて、智忠親王も修学につとめ、和歌・書道・蹴鞠をよくした。なかでも書は、後柏原院流（ごかしわばらいんりゅう）の名手と呼ぶにふさわしい能書家として知られる。この詠草は、「試毫」すなわち、新年の書き初めである。書写年代は不明ながら、枯淡の味わい深い筆致である。「智忠／試毫天の戸の明くる朝の光よりなべて世にしる春の色哉」
