澄月〈ちょうげつ・1714-98〉は、江戸時代中期の僧侶、歌人。備中国玉島の人。俗姓は西山氏。澄月のほかに垂雲軒・酔雲軒・酔夢庵と号した。出家して比叡山に登り、天台教・浄土教を学んだ。のち、諸国を行脚し、洛東岡崎で草庵を結んで隠棲したという。武者小路実岳の門に入り、和歌を学んだ。小沢蘆庵・伴蒿蹊・慈延と相並び、寛政期地下歌人の四天王の一人と称され、門下に多くの歌人を輩出した。家集に『垂雲和歌集』や『澄月法師千首』などを遺す。澄月はこの「八十四歳」の翌年、寛政10年〈1798〉５月２日に、85歳で没している。すなわちこの懐紙は、最晩年に揮毫したものである。「山家の月／八十四翁澄月／世にかよふ心の隈も争はで住めば澄まるる山里の月」
