わが国では永承7年〈1052〉を末法元年と説く。じつに56億7000万年も続くという末法の世に経典が失われてしまうことを怖れた王朝貴族たちは、経巻を経塚の地下深く埋めて後の世にまで残さんとして経筒（金銅製・石製・陶製）に入れて埋納した。しかし紙は腐敗しやすく、土中の不朽を念じて、経文を銅板・瓦や滑石に刻むという工夫がなされた。滑石（含水珪酸マグネシウムを主成分とする鉱物）は石質が柔らかく、文字を彫りやすいという特質がある。遺品は、いずれも北九州出土のものに限る。この滑石経には、「法華経法師功徳品第十九」（部分）が刻まれている。北九州のしかるべき経塚からの出土品であろう。当時の末法思想の流布を考える上で、きわめて重要な位置を占めるものである。
