日東〈にっとう・1581-1648〉は江戸時代初期の日蓮宗の僧侶。妙光寺18世。寛永７年〈1630〉の身池対論の際、日蓮宗の信者ではない国主からの布施供養を受けない（不受不施）とする池上派に対し、身延派（受不施）の代表者の一人として出席した。その翌年には妙本寺・池上本門寺の住持となった。当初の拙筆を恥じ、書法を学ぶこと３年、ついに筆意を体得した、と言われる。万葉仮名と漢字を取り混ぜて書いた、朴訥ながら忠実に伝統書法を習熟せんとする姿勢がうかがわれる、伝存希有な遺墨である。「「梅花開（さ）き始む」ということを詠める和歌／沙門日東／準（なぞ）へなく喜ぶ春に梅の花まづ微笑むる今朝にもあるかな」

詠梅花始開和歌沙門日東なぞへなくよろこぶはるにうめの花まづほゝゑめる今朝にもあるかな
