Asukai Masa-aki (1611-79) was a court noble and poet of the early Edo Period. Born the third son of Asukai Masatsune (1569-1615), he was promoted smoothly, eventually becoming Provisional Major Counselor. Masa-aki excelled in waka composition and aristocratic kemari football, the teaching of the latter was the Asukai Family profession. He was particularly noted for his achievements in waka as he was privately and orally instructed by Emperor GoMizuno-o (1596-1680) to pass down the secrets of the art. As evidenced by his serving as a judge at the Sento Poetry Contest of 1648, Masa-aki was quite active in literary circles. (Sento Palace was the official residence of Emperor GoMizuno-o.) He was also an achieved calligrapher of the Eiga School (or Asukai School), developed by his forefathers. From the title of the poem, we can see that it was written at the New Year’s Poetry Party of February 19, 1629. The combined effect of thick and thin lines show the authentic style established by Asukai Masachika, and the steady brush flow shows that Masaaki was already an accomplished artist at age 19.

On a spring day, a poem composed with the theme “Cherishing Plum Blossoms Every Year”: These plum trees are likely to gain more color, fragrance, and fame as they grow older.
