Takakura Nagasuke (1531-85), the son of Nagaie(1496-1578), was a court noble of the late Muromachi Period. He climbed the court ladder and reached Junior Third Rank in 1560. Thirteen years later (in July 1573), he enlisted in the army of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki (1537-97), even though he was not a vassal. Yoshiaki had mobilized his army to Nijo Castle, challenging imperial authority. But when surrounded by warlord Oda Nobunaga’s (1534-82) army, Nagasuke surrendered; though, he was later pardoned by General Oda. Afterwards, Nagasuke switched sides and joined Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s (1537-98) camp. Later in his career, he assumed the administrative post of Provisional Major Counselor, and was conferred with Senior Second Rank. Only his rank and name “Senior Second Rank Nagasuke” can be seen on the exhibited kaishi because when he was given this rank in 1580, he did not have any post in the government. He was made Provisional Major Counselor on December 23, 1585, at age 55, only two days before his death. From this, we know that this kaishi was written in Nagasuke’s very last years. In calligraphic genealogy, he belonged to the Sonchin School, known for free and relaxed brushstrokes.
On a spring day, a poem sung about the eternal green of the bamboo: People admire the forever green pines, but the bamboos in the yard are equally magnificent.
