Taira no Chikasuke (years of birth and death unknown) passed as the son of Director of the Bureau of Imperial Storekeeping, but was actually the son of Nobumoto’s younger brother, Nobusue. He was the grandson of Minister of Military Affairs Taira-no-Nobunori (1112-?), who left the diary titled Hyohanki (lit. Military Minister Noburi’s Diary). Chikasuke served as a steward to the noble Konoe Family and was later promoted to Minister of Popular Affairs but left this post to become a monk in 1215.Seven of Chikasuke’s extant kaishi were written on the backs of paper comprising the Inokuma-Kampaku-Ki, the diary of Konoe Iezane (1179-1242), and are preserved at the Yomei Bunko Library. Those seven kaishi were written around 1206~07 before Chikasuke turned to Buddhism, and the exhibited kaishi was written not long afterward, perhaps at a poetry party held at the Konoe Family mansions. The title of this poem explains that each participant decided on one character and composed a poem that rhymed with that character. The austere calligraphic style reflects the Hosshoji School, popular during the early Kamakura Period.
