蒲生貞秀〈がもうさだひで・1444?-1514〉は、室町時代後期、近江国（滋賀県）蒲生郡を本拠とする豪族。蒲生家中興の祖。応仁の乱直後に音羽城を築き、明応・文亀両度の合戦に大勝したことで名を上げた。50歳ころ出家して智閑・蛻塵軒（「蛻」は虫のぬけがらの意）と号した。文明年間〈1469～87〉ころから晩年にかけて、旺盛な詠歌活動を展開。三条西実隆をはじめとする公卿や、連歌師の飯尾宗祇ら当代一流の教養人と交わりを深くした。実隆の日記『実隆公記』や家集『再昌草』には、しばしば貞秀の名が登場し、物の贈答など、両者は日常的にも親しい関係にあったことを知る。のびやかで洗練された公卿風の書は、飛鳥井雅親を祖とする飛鳥井流（栄雅流）に属す。雅親との親密なる交遊は、当代の記録が伝えるところである。筆跡にも雅親の影響が色濃くうかがえる。署名により出家以前、壮年期の筆と知る。「秋の日、二首の和歌を詠める／貞秀／暮秋紅葉ゆく秋を慕ふ袂に降り染めて時雨るゝ頃か四方のもみぢ葉／対月懐舊あはれとてつきやつふらむともし火もむかはぬ窓に思ふ昔を」
