Listed in this letter, of which the addressee is unknown, are the names of participants at a tea party scheduled for October 25th of an unknown year. Nothing is known about its sender, Sozen, either. Kanze Sakon-Dayu, mentioned in the letter, however, is undoubtedly Kanze Kokusetsu (1566-1626), the 9th heir and master of the head family presiding over the Kanze School of Noh theatrical art. Another name on the list, Hon-ami Koetsu (1558-1637), was hailed as one of the ‘Three Brushes of the Kanei Era’, in other words, one of the most celebrated calligraphers of that time. Yet another name appearing in the list is Hon-ami Jiro-Saburo, a member of the Hon-ami family, and in fact, a house on the map of Koetsu’s art village in Takaga-Mine is marked Jiro-Saburo. As for Ogata Shinzaburo, he is thought to be Otaga Sohaku (1571-1631), the father of Ogata Soken. From the identities of these people, Sozen was likely an Edo townsman and tea aficionado of the early Edo Period.
