The exhibited shakyo is a copy of the Volume 2 of the two-volume Ninnokyo (Benevolent King) Sutra, which describes the following teaching to 16 kings: Revere the Heart Sutra by holding it high and chanting its text to invoke heavenly protection over the king and his kingdom. During the Tempyo Era (8th c.) this teaching was followed closely in the form of lecture and chanting sessions held in the inner enclosure of the imperial palace (Jp. Daigokuden). These sessions were called “Ninno-E”, as the Ninnokyo Sutra was held in the utmost reverence. The Tendai Sect regarded the Ninnokyo Sutra highly, designating it to be one of the “Three Sacred Guardians of the Nation”, along with two other sutras, namely, the Lotus Sutra and Golden Light Sutra (Jp. Konkomyo-Kyo). Naturally, the Ninnokyo Sutra was copied vigorously; as such, the exhibited handscroll was borne out of deep religious faith. From the typically elegant classical Japanese-style brushwork, this copy was probably made toward the mid-11th century, during the flourishing dynastic Heian era. It is one of the rare, older sutra copies written in gold mud ink on dark-blue paper. The plectrum-shaped roller is made of gilt copper, and its edges are decorated with hair-line carvings of peonies and lotus flowers.
