Karasumaru Sukeyoshi (1622-69) was the son of Provisional Middle Councilor Karasumaru Mitsukata (1600-38) and the grandson of Karasumaru Mitsuhiro (1579-1638). The latter was acclaimed widely as one of the “Three Brushes of the Kanei Era.” Sukeyoshi himself was an achieved poet who left behind a private collection, Shuyo Wakashu (Anthology of Shuyo Waka Poems). Orally instructed by Emperor Gomizunoo in the ancient rules, regulations and decorum, Sukeyoshi showed talent as an academician in the theories of waka poetry. In this letter, Sukeyoshi thanks an unidentified person for editing his poem. The letter probably was addressed to a high-ranking noble in close attendance of Emperor Gomizunoo.Sukeyoshi’s calligraphic works, such as ones on kaishi paper, have often been hailed as exhibiting a typical classical style, but the style he chose for private occasions, such as in this letter and others, is very different. Sukeyoshi’s script seems to have faltered here and there, suggesting that this letter was written in old age.
