The 15th prince of Emperor Goyozei, Jiyin (1617-99) was allowed to use the title of “prince” until October 1629, but he entered a Buddhist temple in November of the following year, asking Princely Priest Saiyin (1563-1639) to be his preceptor. Thereafter, he was given the title “hosshinno” (princely priest) and appointed head priest of Tendaiji Temple three times until his retirement in 1663, when he picked up the pseudonym of Joshu-In. Prince Jiyin studied chado (tea ceremony) and kado (flower arrangement). He was also a highly-trained calligrapher, proved by the fact that he was one of the selected writers of the text accompanying the famous Toshosha Engi Emaki (a historical picture scroll). This letter concerns the Buddhist rite performed for the 11-year-old Prince Morizumi, the 12th prince of Emperor Gomizunoo, and the youth’s entry into the Shoren-In sub-temple.
