「東大寺八幡経」は、東大寺の鎮守であった東大寺八幡宮（現・手向山神社）に奉納された『大般若経』１部600巻で、鎌倉時代を代表する遺品である。紙背に「東大寺八幡宮」の黒印が捺される。各巻によって奥書が異なるが、それらを総合すると、成阿弥陀仏なる尼が、重源〈ちょうげん・1121-1206〉の再建した大仏伽藍安穏のため発願し、東大寺を中心とする南都の僧侶が助筆して書写を完了した。およそ嘉禄２年〈1226〉から安貞２年〈1228〉にかけて書写され、その後、寛喜４年〈1232〉３月23日、同人によって「白檀釈迦牟尼如来像」「般若心経」とともに八幡宮に奉納された。料紙は黄檗染めで光沢のあるやや厚手の楮紙。表紙には黒染めに金銀の箔・砂子で霞引を施し、見返しには銀の切箔を散らしている。また、軸木の中には17字の梵字が墨書されるなど、鎌倉時代の写経として、装丁にも気配りした、最も整った遺品として貴重な存在である。本巻には、つぎのような奥書が見える。「奉加米一石御経蔵造営之五百人結衆之内興福寺住侶俊雅等之内藤原姉子同中子同三子藤原姉子」
