The son of Regent Kujo Kanetaka, Yukiyie (1586-1665) was grandson to Kujo Tanemichi, one of the most celebrated scholars of Japanese classics of the day. Yukiyie was promoted smoothly up the court hierarchy, and, at age 23, he became Regent and then assumed the head of the family. In 1612, Yukiyieresigned from Regency but resumed this post several years later and held it until 1624.This is a thank-you letter Yukiyie wrote for the gift of food (most likely a rare delicacy) that he received in a wooden container. Yukiyie was not at home when the gift arrived as he was visiting a hot spring spa. Yukiyie writes that he will visit the sender to properly thank him for the gift after his return home. This letter suggests a frequent correspondence between close friends, and the brushwork is somewhat slow and deliberate, suggesting that it was written in old age. Yukiyie lived 81 years.
