A court noble of the early Edo Period, Aburanokoji Takatsune (1595-1655) was the second son of Minister of the Interior Hirohashi Kanekatsu before adoption into the Aburanokoji family to become the sixth heir of the family lineage originated by Provisional Major Counselor Aburanokoji Takakage. The family line had been cut off when the fifth heir, Takatsugu, died of illness in 1535, but Takatsune revived the line. After serving as Director-General at the Sovereign’s Secretariat, he eventually reached the post of Provisional Middle Counselor in 1649.Takatsune wrote this letter to Niwata Shigehide (1606-50) to thank for a gift of waka kaishi (Japanese poetry written on folded paper) by Prince Sada-atsu (1488-1572), the adopted son of Emperor Goshirakawa.
