The son of Major General of the Right Ano Suetoki, Saneaki (1581-1645) was actually his grandson but was adopted to become the family heir. He was promoted to Provisional Middle Counselor in 1619 and then Provisional Major Counselor in 1633.This letter refers to a game of kemari held at the home of the Asukai family, the originators and thus rightful instructors of this form of Japanese football. Saneaki writes that all the spectators enjoyed the exciting match and that he regrets not writing sooner to thank the Asukais for the good time, but he explains that he has been away. As for the addressee, Saneaki simply wrote “Mr. Asukai,” who was probably Masanobu (1586-1651), Saneaki’s contemporary in the Asukai family. This letter is a fine example of a private correspondence written in the Koetsu School style, of which Saneaki was a known master.
