Prince Toshihito (1579-1629) was the sixth prince of Honorary Emperor Yoko (1522-86) and the younger brother of Emperor Goyozei (1571-1617), who had been born of the same mother. At first, Prince Toshihito was adopted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) to succeed him, but was later allowed to establish his own noble household, Hachijo-no-Miya, or the Hachijo Prince’s Household. He was then adopted by Emperor Ogimachi (1517-93), declared crown prince, and given the new name of Prince Toshihito. But after he founded Katsura Detached Palace, Toshihito was thereafter referred to as the first-generation prince of Katsura-no-Miya. Prince Toshihito studied the secrets of Japanese poetry under Hosokawa Yusai (1534-1610) and was to become the era’s foremost intellectual, thoroughly versed in the fine arts, ceremonial tea, and flower arranging. His talents in Japanese poetry and calligraphy were noteworthy. In the core of this letter, Toshihito talks about a festival: “Today (March 4th) is Kinoyene Day. But as night falls, I’m at a loss since I have nobody to enjoy conversing with. Will you please come and visit me if you have no other commitments?” What the prince is referring to is an ancient practice that had arose in Kyoto in which people would sit up all night engaged in conversations on Kinoyene Day. The practice was commonly called ‘Koshi-machi’ (lit. ‘waiting on Kinoyene Day’), or Kinoyene Fest, which fell on March 4th in 1592. In that year, Prince Toshihito was only 14 years old.
Today (March 4th) is Kinoyene Day. But as night falls, I’m at a loss since I have nobody to enjoy conversing with. Will you please come and visit me if you have no other commitments?
