わが国では永承7年〈1052〉を末法元年と説く。56億7000万年も続くという末法の世に経典が失われてしまうことを怖れた王朝貴族たちは、経巻を経塚の地下深く埋めて後の世にまで残さんとして経筒（金銅製・石製・陶製）に入れて埋納した。しかし、紙は腐敗しやすいため、土中の不朽を念じて、経文を銅板・瓦や滑石に刻むという工夫がなされた。この瓦経は、素焼きの平瓦に経文を陰刻したもの。刻される経典は、『法華経』を中心に浄土三部経がほとんどである。これは、『法華経』方便品第二の偈の部分。こうした瓦経は、各地の経塚から出土するが、ほとんどが西日本から出土している。制作時期は、現在知られている資料によると、延久３年〈1071〉から承安４年〈1174〉までの約100年間に集中する。末法思想の背景を証明する遺品である。
