Noted calligrapher of the Edo Period Terada Muzen (?-1691) served three generations of the noble Konoe family and is said to have lived to the amazing old age of 119. Studying calligraphy under Fujiki Atsunao (1582-1649), Muzen mastered the classical Jodaiyo style. With this and his training in Confucianism, waka and renga (linked verse) composition, chanoyu and Zen philosophy, he was hailed a true intellectual of the era.It is New Year’s Eve, and Muzen had been commissioned to draw festive paintings (of boats filled with treasures, etc.) to commemorate the season. He writes that he has finished painting five of them, which are to be promptly shipped to the client, a Furusawa Sayemon (identity unknown), accompanied by noshi (a square piece of wrapping paper). Muzen has also composed the opening line of a poem and asks the addressee to add to the verse and return it to him. The opening line reads like this: “If there is any space left on the Treasure Boat, do not forget to load this Year of the Horse.” (Note: The Year of the Horse is the seventh on the Chinese zodiac calendar.)
