Honorary Emperor Yoko(1552-86) was the first prince born to Emperor Ogimachi(1517-93). The prince’s mother was Fujiwara Fusako, the daughter of the Minister of the Right, Madeno-koji Hidefusa (1492-1563). In 1568, the prince was declared Imperial Prince Sanehito. In the same month, a ceremony was held to celebrate the new prince’s coming of age. Regent Nijo Haruyoshi(1526-79) took charge of crowning the prince. He then was adopted by the Minister of the Right, Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), who gave the newly built Nijo Palace (today’s Nijo Castle) to the prince. Thereupon, he moved into the new mansion. However, the uprisings following the Honnoji Revolt, in which Nobunaga was assassinated, reached Nijo Palace. The prince therefore returned to the Imperial Palace, but he was taken ill in the following year. Although arrangements were being made for the prince’s father, Emperor Ogimachi, to retire and Prince Sanehito to ascend to the throne, he died before the event took place. He was only 35. Posthumously, he was given the title of honorary Emperor Yoko. This letter is addressed to Prince Sanehito’s father, Emperor Ogimachi, but, as was the practice of the day, it was disrespectful to address a correspondence directly to anybody of higher rank, so it was sent to a high-ranking female officer. He first apologizes for not quickly attending to a certain document due to a hangover. Then from the fourth line onward, he states his interpretation of the wording in a poem. The prince says that the opening stanza deals with the summer, while the bottom stanza sings about autumn. Seemingly, a poem like this is unconventional, but is acceptable, since it can be likened to some people still wearing summer clothes in early autumn. Chinese characters (kanji) and hiragana freely intermix with each other, while the shades of ink vary widely, thus attaining the end result of beauty in diversity.
