平安時代の中期から後期にかけて、華麗な装飾経が流行した。王朝貴族たちが、写経成仏（法師品）・女人成仏（提婆品）を説く『法華経』の功徳を信じ、さらには、折柄の末法思想や浄土思想の流布とも関わり、人々は末法の危機感と恐怖から逃れるべく、現世の極楽を願い、後世の成仏を祈った。仏の加護を得たいと願う人々は、『法華経』の利益を信じ、こぞって『法華経』の写経に励み、写経供養が流行することとなった。一人が一巻を担当するのを一巻経、一品ごとを分担するのを一品経と呼んだ。各巻ごとに、これを結縁した宮廷貴族のひたむきな気持ちを反映して、本紙や写経の文字、さらに軸・紐・題簽などに装飾を施し、美の限りを尽くした装飾経が誕生していったのである。こうした風潮は鎌倉時代初期まで継承された。これは、『無量義経』の断簡。平安時代中期に流行した「法華経一品経供養」の一具（開経）としてつくられたものである。金泥の界を引き。上下のみ大・小の金銀の切箔を撒いた瀟洒な装飾料紙に書写される。経文の筆跡も温和な和様の書風を見せる。
