Fujita Yukan (year of birth and death unknown) practiced calligraphy under Shokado Shojo (1584-1639) and later became an achieved Shokado School calligrapher. He was originally from Settsu Province (today’s Osaka) and pursued an active career in the early Edo Period. Interestingly, it was Yukan’s wife who prompted him to learn calligraphy, reminding him of his ugly handwriting. After twenty years of hard work, Yukan mastered the art of brushwork in calligraphy and painting, and earned a reputation as Shojo’s protégé. Yukan was said to have had 1,000 students at one time. This letter is a reply to Watanabe Gorobe, who had advised Yukan that Sotetsu (for whom Watanabe probably served as retainer), Doshu and other family members were well. Yukan’s letter refers to “a bag each of two kinds of medicine” that Doshu had sent him, calling himself “a sick man.” From this, one can assume that Sotetsu and Doshu were doctors, and, from other documents, we know there was a doctor named Sotetsu, who was the son of the court physician Yamawaki Genshin. Yamawaki studied medicine under the famous Manase Gensaku (1549-1631). Therefore, the Sotetsu mentioned in this letter could have been Yamawaki Genshin’s son. It’s likely that Doshu was Sotetsu’s son or brother. The generous and uninhibited flow of the script here is proof of the mastery Yukan achieved in the Shokado School.
