Princely Priest Joyin (1548-1621) was the fifth prince born to Prince Kunisuke (Fushimino-miya). In 1564, he was appointed to serve at the Imperial temple of Myoho-In, affiliated with Tendaiji Temple, following a similar move by Prince Gyoson. In 1575, he became the adopted heir to Emperor Ogimachi (1517-93) and was declared Imperial Prince. His name was changed to Seiyin, but, after entering Buddhist priesthood, his name was re-changed to Joyin. In 1597, he succeeded his younger brother, Princely Priest Soncho (1552-97), to become the 168th prelate of Tendaiji Temple, the post he served under until 1612. The “Hoyin” (an honorific added to masters in medicine, painting, or poetry composition) appearing in this letter refers to Maeda Genyi (1539-1602), who was one of the Five Commissioners serving the Toyotomi clan. “Taiko” (Retired Regent), needless to say, refers to Generalissimo Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98). Hideyoshi did not use this title until 1591, so one can assume that this letter was written when Prince Joyin was between the ages of 44 and 50. The content of the letter is not easy to understand. It reports various matters--the increased estate, the annual nengu tax (a rice tribute to the ruler as a land tax), the vegetarian Buddhist diet, etc.--on which the prince states his opinions. It is addressed to “Baiken,” most likely a warrior-cum-secretary working for Maeda Genyi. Prince Joyin exhibits the calligraphic style of the Soncho School, which inherited the Shoren-In School originated by Prince Son-en (1298-1356). The letter clearly shows that the prince had meticulously studied traditional forms.
