Prince Yukihito (1656-99) was the second prince of Emperor Gosai and, in his childhood, was called Ninomiya (lit. second prince). By 1667 he had taken the name Tagano-Miya, when he inherited the Takamatsu-Miya imperial family line originated by Prince Yoshihito and became the second-generation head of this family. Then in 1669, he was allowed to call himself imperial prince, thereupon changing his name again, this time to Yukihito. Finally, in 1672, Emperor Gomizunoo suggested that the family name be changed to Arisugawa-no-Miya, leaving, in retrospect, Prince Yoshihito as the first-generation; Emperor Gosai (also known as Prince Yoshihito, a different spelling with the same pronunciation), the second-generation; and Prince Yukihito, the third-generation head of the Arisugawa-no-Miya imperial family. From a young age, Prince Yukihito showed talent in calligraphy and was personally trained by Emperor Reigen, his uncle. He was later renowned in the imperial court as a peerless calligrapher. In this letter, Prince Yukihito describes the hand-copied waka poems he has completed on colored paper for the byobu (decorated room partition screens) newly procured, together with other palace furniture, for Emperor Higashiyama. The prince addresses the three officials in charge of the furniture procurement, through whom he would like his brushwork to be shown to the emperor. Major Counselor Otagi, the last of the addressees, is Otagi Michitomi (aged 62), who became Provisional Major Counselor on December 19, 1694, but resigned from the post on November 16 the following year. From these dates, this letter was most likely written February 19, 1695, when Prince Yukihito was 40. The other addressees are Nakami Sukehiro (aged 61) and Koga Michizane (aged 36).
