もともと、写経は、自筆が最大の善根と信じられていた。が、時代の推移とともに、財力に乏しい人々やより多くの人たちの願いをかなえるために、版本の写経（摺経）制作が考えられた。平安時代中期から鎌倉時代にそれは盛行する。そのうち、大和国南都興福寺で印刷・出版された版本が「春日版」呼ばれるもの。これは、そのうちの「大般若波羅蜜多経」（巻第四四二）の巻頭部分の１紙である。内題の下部に「奉施入賀茂社願主法眼聖長」の墨印が捺される。もともとは、法眼聖長（不詳）を発願主として企図された「大般若波羅蜜多経」１部600巻が京都の賀茂社に施入されたものであったことを知る。
