A noble man of the mid-Edo Period, Konoe Motohiro (1648-1722) was a true blue blood. His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, and his mother was Princess Akiko, the daughter of reigning Emperor Gomizunoo. After successively assuming the highest administrative posts, i.e., Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Right and Minister of the Left, Motohiro was promoted to Regent in 1690 and then reached the highest court post of Chancellor in 1709. Thoroughly trained across all fields of art and literature, Lord Motohiro was particularly famous for his classical Jodaiyo style of calligraphy, patterned after the masterpieces of the Heian Period, and is considered a pioneer in reviving the ancient indigenous form.In this letter, Konoe Motohiro says the matter involving Bukkokuji Temple was unfortunate. While the temple is central to the Bukkoji group of temples professing Jodo Shinshu, or True Pure Land Sect Buddhism, the details of the said matter are not known. The addressee, Major Counselor Kajuji, is Kajuji Tsuneyoshi (1644-1709). He held the aforesaid post between December 1, 1677, and December 23, 1684, so from this, one can determine that the letter was written when Motohiro was between the ages of 30 and 43. Unfortunately, it is not possible to further narrow the exact time of the letter.
