As the grandson of Hon-ami Koetsu(1558-1637), Koho (1601-82) had a very active career, and the reigning emperor ranked him “Hogen” (lit. “Eye of the Law”), an honorary designation patterned after the clerical hierarchy and given only to extremely successful artists. Assuming the family profession of making and appraising swords, Koho won the trust of the Maeda clan, the governors of Kaga Province, to such an extent that he was granted an annual salary of 300 goku (bales of rice). Inheriting his grandfather’s artistic and literary talents, Koho excelled in various disciplines, including chanoyu, brushwork in calligraphy and painting, and pottery making. In this letter, Koho describes an old sword that had been cast in Seki (today’s Seki City in Gifu Prefecture) and authenticates it as the work of the acclaimed swordsmith Hironaga, who lived during the Bunmei Era (1469-87). Koho goes on to say that the sword is worth 15 ryo (a currency unit). Not much is known about the addressee, a Saito Matajiro.
