Karasumaru Mitsukata (1600-38), the legitimate son and heir to Karasumaru Mitsuhiro (1579-1638), rapidly climbed the government hierarchy and became Provisional Middle Counselor in 1630 at the age of 31. For the purpose of understanding this letter, it’s also helpful to know that his wife was the daughter of Lord Hosokawa Tadaoki and Lady Gracia, a Catholic. This letter is addressed to Hosokawa Tadatoshi (1586-1641), the older brother of Mitsukata’s wife. From it, one can learn that it accompanied a gift of frankincense that Mitsukata was blending to present to Tadatoshi. The letter also reports that Mitsukata’s second daughter married Asukai Masaaki and that her pregnancy is nearing its term. Despite all these details, the date remains unidentifiable; however, the matured style, resembling that of Mitsukata’s father, suggests that it was written when the sender was in his mid-30s.The thick and thin variations in brush strokes and the flowing style make this letter quite elegant.
