Reizei Tameyori (1592-1627), the son of Major Counselor Reizei Tamemitsu(1559-1619), was a court noble and officer and a renowned poet of the early Edo Period. He was promoted to a high governmental position in 1626 at the young age of 36, the same year as the birth of his son. However, Tameyori’s life would be cut short. ‘Goryo-Betsu Hoin’, the addressee of this letter, is an abbreviation for Goryosha Betto Hoin. ‘Goryosha’ refers to a Shinto shrine where ceremonies were held to console the souls of the dead. (Notes: The Yasaka Shrine, also called Gionsha, in Kyoto, is known for officiating large-scale events of this kind, which are called Gion-ye.) The addressee was the Betto, or head priest, who presided over the soul-consoling ceremony. In the correspondence, Tameyori asks the Betto of Gionsha to name his long-awaited newborn son. The baby, named Torakuma Maru (Tiger-and-Bear boy), was renamed Tameharu after the initiation rite. The letter was written on September 17th, a year before Tameyori’s death. The young man exhibits typical Teika School calligraphy, originated by his remote ancestor.
