Prince Ryojo (1574-1643) was a “hosshinno,” a princely priest serving at a Buddhist temple, and was the third son of Prince Sanehito (1552-86) and the younger brother of Emperor Goyozei (1571-1617). Ryojo entered the Manshu-In sub-temple in 1587 but was designated heir apparent to the crown the following year. He took the tonsure under Prince Soncho, and in 1593, a ceremony involving the sprinkling of water was conducted on his behalf, celebrating his achievements in Buddhist discipline. In 1639, he was appointed the 174th bishop of Tendai Temple. The prince excelled in calligraphy, painting, and writing Japanese waka and renga (linked verse) poems. This letter is addressed to Yodoya Koan (1577-1643), a rich trader/merchant of Osaka and a widely known art aficionado. Prince Ryojo asks Koan to evaluate his poem, and the writing in small letters between the lines is the latter’s reply. Koan, well versed in tea ceremony and renga composition, was also an achieved calligrapher who associated with well-known intellectuals of contemporary Edo, including Konoe Nobuhiro, Kobori Enshu, Shokado Shojo and Takuan Soho. This letter is evidence of Koan’s widely varied friendships.
