オセアニアでも他に類例の少ない固有の漁法，「鮫招き」に用いられた道具である．ココナッツの殻の上端と下端がリング状に切り出され，環状に巻かれた細竹に2 個1 組で向かい合うように通されている．細竹は二重巻で，外れないよう蔓植物で固定されている．一巻に10 組以上の殻が付けられ，打ち振るとそれらがぶつかり合ってカラカラと音を立てる．水中で鳴らすと，水鳥が小魚を襲う音と勘違いして，鮫が浮上してくると言う．その鮫を餌の魚でカヌーの近くにおびき寄せ，ロープで首を締め上げたのちに棍棒で仕留める．「鮫招き」は日常的に行われるというよりも，成人儀礼と密接に結びつく漁で，女性や未婚の若い男性は参加できない．ニューアイルランド島には，創世神モロアによって同時に生み出された鮫と人間を対等の存在とする信仰がある．それゆえ，カヌーに寄ってくる鮫と自分は同じ氏族だとみなされる．
