Jokei (1155-1213) was a scholar-monk of the Hosso Sect during the early Kamakura Period. He entered Buddhist training at Kofukuji Temple in Nara at the age of 8 (1162) and dedicated his life to the learning of Buddhist principles. In 1192, he retired to Kasagi Temple in Kyoto but, later in 1208, moved to Kaiju Senji Temple. The sudden, unexpected retirement was Jokei’s attempt to resuscitate Nara Buddhism, spurred by self-criticism of his own pursuit of renown at the cost of Buddhist principles---a pursuit that was rampant among the temples. It was also an escape from restriction. His literary work, Myohon Sho, was written in his latter years and is a testimony to Jokei’s deep learning and insight into Hosso Sect Buddhism.This letter is an example of the ancient style of kanpenjo. The addressee of the letter writes his comments and response in the blank spaces between the lines of the original letter, which is thereafter returned to the original sender. This kanpenjo discusses Buddhist doctrine and is quite difficult to decipher. Since its value is priceless, clarification by means of research is ardently needed.
