Asano Takakatsu (1536-1613) was a general during the Sengoku Period (lit. “Age of Country at War”). His common names were Sukezaemon and Magozaemon. He originally served General Akechi Mitsuhide, but, after the failed coup d’etat attempt by Mitsuhide, Takakatsu was invited to live in Ohtsu by Lord Asano Nagamasa and became a guardian to his son Yukinaga. Takakatsu participated in the battles of Bunroku and Keicho (Hideyoshi’s military campaign to conquer Korea) and fought on Yukinaga’s side in the famous Battle of Sekigahara. He died of illness in 1613 at age 78.In the letter, Takakatsu gives thanks for the dinner the previous night. In return, he is sending a box of sushi made with sweet fish. It was probably sent to his close friend and fellow tea enthusiast. The excellent hand shows how cultivated he was in artistic training.
