Kazan-in Morokata (1301-32) was a well-known poet and a loyal vassal of Emperor Godaigo (1288-1399). The highest administrative position he assumed was that of Provisional Major . He took part in a conspiracy to subvert the Kamakura Shogunate, and, when Emperor Godaigo escaped to Kasagi after the Genko-no-Ran (Genko Rebellion of 1331), Morotake disguised himself as the Emperor and went up to Enryakuji as His Majesty’s substitute. But the enemy discovered the disguise and arrested Morokata after the fall of the provisional palace structure built in the compound of Kasagi Temple. Thereafter, he became a monk and received the Buddhist name of Sotei. This letter was abbreviated to an extent to render its interpretation very difficult. At the end, a note is added that the letter carrier, a Kintsura (no detailed information about him), would convey the details. The signature is extremely stylized, showing that its writer had a good amount of training in calligraphy. However, since Morokata died young, only a few of his authentic handwritten documents remain today. The present letter, therefore, is of important historical and artistic value.
