The writer of this letter, Maeda Toshitsune (1593-1658), was the fourth son of Lord Maeda Toshiyie (1537-99), the founder of the Maeda family and later became the third governor of Kanazawa Province. He was adopted by his brother Toshinaga (1562-1614) in 1600 at age 8 and was initiated into adulthood at age 13; whereupon, he was granted the use of the surname Matsudaira. Thereafter, he was appointed Lord of Chikugo. This letter is addressed to Kasuga-no-Tsubone (1579-1643), the governess of Tokugawa Iemitsu (later the third shogun of the Tokugawa government, 1604-51). In the letter, Toshitsune writes that he is relieved to know that Iemitsu is regaining good health and that his appetite is returning. He then makes further inquiries into Iemitsu’s health. Toshitsune signed this letter “Lord of Chikugo, Matsudaira,” so it was written before 1629, when he was appointed Lord of Hizen at age 37. To pinpoint the date further, one can look at the beginning of the letter, in which Iemitsu is referred to as “Kubo” (highest-ranking military general or emperor). This means, Iemitsu had been sworn in as the shogun, which took place in 1623. Finally, a comparison of the letter’s reference to Iemitsu’s health with historical records shows that the shogun was stricken with malaria on May 18, 1628, and doctors were summoned. From this, one can identify the exact date of this letter to be June 4th of 1628, when Toshitsune was 36 years old.
