A waka poet and theoretician of the mid-Edo Period, Ozawa Roan (1723-1801) studied the art of waka composition under Reizei Tamemura, but he was later disinherited for not following the Reizei School’s traditional style. Thereafter, he established his own style, which advocated simplicity, sincerity and spontaneity in poetry and eliminated calculated techniques and artifice. Later, he was hailed as one of the Four Kings of Kyoto Waka Poets, with the other three being Chogetsu (1714-98), Ban Kokei (1733-1806) and Priest Jien (1748-1805). As for Roan’s calligraphy, it was written in the Teika style in early years, but it gradually shifted to the classical Jodaiyo style. The piece exhibited here is a very rare example of an illustrated letter, which Roan addressed to haiku poet and literary painter Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811), asking him to paint two pictures showing animals and plant life considered of good luck. One illustration shows a pine tree and a crane, and the other, a turtle and Mount Kasuga. Roan’s instructions are quite precise as he wants a poem of his own making to be arranged with the painting of the pine and the crane. Since this letter is dated November 29th and due to the festive objects, the two paintings must have been commissioned to celebrate New Year’s.
