赤道の先に横たわるニューギニアで20世紀初頭に収集された楕円形の飾り盾で、極めて珍しい民族資料である。カニクサ属の蔓で編んだ網代を粘土で塗り固め、ブタとイルカ類の歯牙をその中に整然と埋め込んでいる。ヤシ科繊維を撚った綱と房が周りを取り囲み、ヒクイドリの黒い羽根が縁を飾る。中央には、盾部と同じ技法で造作された面長の仮面が付く。顎には縮れた人毛が植え込まれ、その直上に人の臼歯が並ぶ。下方に垂れ下がる鼻はセピック河下流域に広く認められる造形表現である。
詳細な記録は残っていないが、米国とオランダにある数少ない類例情報からセピック河東岸に流下するケラム川沿いのバナロ社会から収集されたと考えられる。村々は第二次大戦後にキリスト教の影響で大きく変わったが、それまでは男性小屋を中心に社会生活が営まれていた。長手40mほどの高床式で、短手に設けられた張り出しに入口があった。なかの祭壇には精霊像が祀られていたというから、本資料も祭祀とかかわる造形物として男性小屋に保管されていた可能性が高い。ブタやヒクイドリは重要なトーテム動物であり、ブタの歯牙は権威や富の証でもあった。
