Matsunaga Teitoku (1571-1653) hailed from Kyoto and was a haiku poet and scholar of Japanese classics who lived during the Azuchi-Momoyama Period and early Tokugawa (Edo) Period. Thanks to the circle of friends of his father, Nagatane, a known rengashi (writer of linked verses), Teitoku was trained in early childhood in waka and renga poetry composition under dozens of great literary figures of the time, including Kujo Tanemichi (1507-94), Hosokawa Yusai (1534-1610), Satomura Joha (1524-1620), among others. Consequently, Teitoku’s mastery of various arts attracted a great following, and he was considered one of the most representative poets of the era, as famous as Kinoshita Chochoshi (1569-1649). Teitoku became the originator of the Teimon School of haiku composition. He cultivated friendships with the Confucian scholars Fujiwara Seika (1561-1619) and Hayashi Razan (1583-1657), as well as with the tea master Anrakuan Sakuden (1554-1642). In his 20s, Teitoku served General Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) as his private secretary, a position only granted to achieved calligraphers. Perhaps writing in great haste, Teitoku apologies that he has to jot down this letter on a small piece, the only paper available as his secretary is absent and unable to write on his behalf. It is addressed to Okamoto Ninyi, whose identity is not known, but Teitoku writes that he is giving Okamoto a rating of “excellent” for his poetic compositions (in waka, renga or haiku) and notes he is happy about the completion of the anthology. As such, the addressee was most likely Teitoku’s disciple.
