Satomura Joha (1524-1602) was a renga poet of the Muromachi Period known also by the pen name of Rinkosai. He spent his childhood at Kofukuji Temple, but after his encounter with the renga techer Shukei, he became his disciple and went up to Kyoto. After Shukei passed away, Joha’s teacher was Satomura Shokyu. After Shokyu passed away, Joha was adopted into the Satomura family by inheriting the family headship. He raised Shokyu’s young son. Joha was trained by Sanjonishi Kinyeda (1487-1563) in classical poetry composition and the classics; from Konoe Taneiye (1503-66), he inherited oral instructions on classical literature; and he trained under Sen-no-Rikyu in the art of ceremonial tea. Closely associating with the most powerful figures of the time, such as Oda Nobunaga, Akechi Mitsuhide, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Toyotomi Hidetsugu, Joha enjoyed power and fame as the supreme renga poet of the day. This letter is interesting since it consists of the first stanza of a renga (linked verse) he had composed at various poetry or tea parties and sent to Mouri Motoyasu (1560-1601), who was the eighth son of the famous warlord Mouri Motonari. At its writing, Motoyasu was a minor officer of the Imperial Guard of the Right. When Motoyasu’s elder brother died, he was adopted into that family and established a branch house of Mouri in Assa. What you can see in the letter are the first verses that Joha composed on the following occasions: a renga party hosted by Kampaku (Regent) Toyotomi Hideyoshi at Maeda Genyi’s mansion and a party at the home of Shimotsuma Nakayuki, a Honganji Templedevotee, or at the private home of Soshun (likely a renga poet) in Yashima, Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture). Using the names of such people as clues and the rather sobering calligraphic style, we can speculate that this letter was possibly written in old age.
