Sakugen Shuryo (1501-79) was a Zen monk of the Muromachi Period. He was born the third son to Inouye Munenobu, the high-ranking officer, or Regent, serving the House of Hosokawa. After receiving training under Shinno Toan at Rokuonji Temple, Sakugen took the Buddhist tonsure at Tenryuji Temple at age 18. In the tributary trade initiated by Ouchi Yoshitaka (1507-51), Sakugen was appointed deputy envoy of the mission sent to the Ming Dynasty of China in 1539, and then envoy in 1547. He fulfilled his duties well and brought back many rare Chinese editions and, in the process, wrote a documentary, Sakugen Nyumin Ki (lit. “Sakugen’s Record of His Visit to Ming”). Excelling both in verse and prose, Sakugen cultivated friendships with Chinese intellectuals and was famous as the scholar of the latter days of the Sacred Five Mountains. This letter conveys Sakugen’s gratitude for a year-end gift, and it was sent from Myochi-In sub-temple located in the Tenryuji Temple compound. (Sakugen served as the third bishop of this temple.) He gives thanks for the monetary gift (silver coins) that he received for a celebration. The letter is presumably addressed to Priest Yugen, who was the head priest at Atago Daizen-In. Yugen exchanged renga (linked verse) poems with Satomura Joha and Akechi Mitsuhide in Atago Hyakuin (lit. “A Hundred Poems Composed at Mt. Atago”). Sakugen and Joha were friends, and Mitsuhide seemed to have been closely associated with Sakugen since the estate for Myochi-In was secured by Mitsuhide. Renga was most likely the tool that brought these prominent men together.
