Noted calligrapher of the Edo Period Terada Muzen (?-1691) served three generations of the noble Konoe family and is said to have lived to the amazing old age of 119. Studying calligraphy under Fujiki Atsunao (1582-1649), Muzen mastered the classical Jodaiyo style. With this and his training in Confucianism, waka and renga (linked verse) composition, chanoyu and Zen philosophy, he was hailed a true intellectual of the era.In this letter, Terada Muzen apologizes to the addressee for not being at home when called upon. As chamberlain of the Konoe family, he was often kept working long hours, and when his master was late in returning from business, he was further delayed. Muzen writes that he has examined the two hanging scrolls to verify their authenticity. The two brushworks were alleged to have been written by Priests Baigai and Shunoku, and he notes that both works appear to be authentic. This letter is interesting as it shows that Muzen was also working, perhaps part time, as an art appreciator, in addition to serving the Konoe family.
