The second son of Regent Ichijo Akiyoshi (1605-72, the ninth prince of Emperor Goyozei), Daigo Fuyumoto (1648-97) became the founder of the Daigo family and, at the age of 37, was appointed to Provisional Major Counselor in 1684. It was through a descendant of his father’s older brother Konoe Nobuhiro (1599-1649, fourth prince of Emperor Goyozei) that Fuyumoto, as well as his son, Akitada (1679-1756), was also trained in the “family trade,” the Jodaiyo writing style. That descendant, Konoe Iyehiro (1667-1736, born to Princess Akiko, the daughter of Emperor Gomizunoo) contributed greatly to the revival of the ancient style. Fuyumoto asks the addressee, a Syoren-In Monzeki (an imperial prince residing at a temple), to hurry and add a calligraphic note to the brush-and-ink painting of Murasaki Shikibu (Lady Murasaki, the author of the Tale of Genji), a request made earlier by the painter Bunkai. Bunkai was the pseudonym used by Unkoku Toban (1635-1724), the fourth son of Unkoku Toeki (1591-1644), the originator of the Unkoku School of painters. In 1668, Bunkai inherited the family name, trade and estate, and actively fulfilled his duties as head of this prominent family. The Syoren-In Monzeki mentioned here is the 29th Sonkei (also Shucho) Hosshinno (1634-80).
