Takatsukasa Kanehiro (1659-1725) was the 16th generation head of the Takatsukasa family, one of the five major households that traditionally assumed the imperial regent’s post. As the son of Regent Takatsukasa Fusasuke (1637-1700), Kanehiro was promoted smoothly, and after becoming Minister of the Right and later Minister of the Left, he reached the regent’s post in 1703. However, he resigned from this post after only five years and died in 1725 at age 67. In this letter, Lord Kanehiro asks the High Priest Koken (1639-1707) if he has to write down all five poems intended for a hanging scroll or just the first one. Priest Koken, of Daigo Sambo-In Temple, was actually Fusasuke’s younger brother, and thus Kanehiro’s uncle.
