Born the first son of Provisional Middle Counselor Hino Mitsuyoshi (1591-1630), Hirosuke (1617-87) climbed the court hierarchy quite rapidly to eventually become Provisional Major Counselor. He was also head of the Hino clan, in service to the sovereign as masters in Confucianism and kado (art of waka poetry composition), and excelled in both of these arts. In waka poetry, Emperor Gomizunoo honored him by orally teaching him the essence of Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems). Hirosuke’s associates were equally celebrated men of letters, among who were Nakanoin Michishige, Asukai Masaaki and Princely Priest Ryojo. The addressee of this letter, Lord Kubo, the governor of Izumi, is Kubo Katsutoki (1627-92). In 1672, Lord Kubo was a trusted vassal of Lady Tofukumon-In Masako, the daughter of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada, before being appointed governor. Hirosuke also mentions a “Lord Uesugi,” Uesugi Nagayuki (1644-84), who became the governor of Ise in 1663. From the political careers of these two governors and historical records, one can assume that this letter deals with the major event of the time, a seven-day ceremony held in September 1677 to commemorate Emperor Gomizunoo’s moving to a new imperial palace. The calligraphic style exhibits elements of the Shoren-In School, popular among nobility at the time.
