Heian court noble Hino Sukenaga (1119-95) was renowned for his learning in Confucianism, and hiscareer culminated in the honorable position of Monjyo-Hakase (Doctor of Literature, or master scholar of poetry and history). Sukenaga was also an achieved poet and left many classical Japanese waka poems. He was appointed Gon-Chunagon (provisional middle counselor) in 1165 and was later promoted to the Minister of Popular Affairs of the Heian court in 1179. However, he retired into priesthood in 1181 in Hino, Kyoto. Thereafter, he called himself “Hino Nyudo,” meaning “the Priest of Hino.”His letter was addressed to Izumi Zenji thanking the priest that his “seasonal headaches were cured by moxibustion and your kind prayers.” Izumi Zenji was likely a high-ranking priest at an esoteric Buddhist temple located in Izumi (Osaka). Sukenaga’s brother Mitsunari (also called Mitsumori) had served as provincial governor in Izumi, so the friendship could have been attributed to him.
